My Kids ....
|
|
I'm changing some old family photos displayed around the house with new ones ....
I sent these photos to be enlarged this morning to a 8 x 12 inch prints, only to find out that my old frames are for 8R photo prints ... they are 8 x 10 inches. Initially I just wanted to crop the prints to fit the frames, but on second thoughts, I'd get some new frames for these new prints. So, looks like the old photos stays as they are in the "old" frames and I need to go buy new frames tomorrow

More pics on the actual day of Thaipusam, 25th January 2005 ....
Initially I thought I could not go to Batu Caves for the Thaipusam ceremonies because I was supposed to babysit my 3 sons ... my wife had to go to work, and my parents going back to their home. But then, later on Monday afternoon, my parents told me that they'll leave on Wednesday .... My mom can babysit my kids on Tuesday ... Yayyy!!!!
I immediately called Syahrin to ask if he could lend me his Canan EOS 20D. He said "yes" .... Double Yayyy!!!
Early Tuesday morning, I left for Batu Cave. I met Hasrul and Saiful Nang in the Temple grounds.
I have some photos to share ... many thanks to Syahrin for lending me the 20D

Sunday 23rd January 2005. It was Thaipusam minus two days .... To beat the more than one million crowd on the actual day of Thaipusam (25th January 2005), I went to Batu Caves with zzoux to have a first hand look of this Hindu religious congragation.
And what a sight to behold .... the color .... the culture. It was a great learnig experience.
Here are some photos taken on that day ...

Thaipusam ... A test of faith
By Wani Muthiah
THAIPUSAM is an annual Hindu festival which draws the largest gathering in multi-racial Malaysia - nearly a million people in 2000.
Several hundred devotees spear their cheeks with long, shiny steel rods - often a metre long - and pierce their chests and backs with small, hook-like needles in penance.
Tourists watch in awe as metal pierces the skin with hardly any bleeding and, apparently, no pain as the devotee stands in a trance in the dawn light after weeks of rigorous abstinence.
Over the years, curious British, American and Australian medical experts have come to observe and speculate. Some think the white ash smeared on the body, the juice squeezed from the yellow lime fruit or the milk poured on the pierced areas may help to numb the skin. But most admit they have no answer.
The devotees say it is faith.
"The belief in Lord Murugan is what prevents the pain and the bleeding," says Krishna Vadyar, a priest at the temple which conducts the annual rituals.
There are plenty stories about what Thaipusam is about. Among the most popular is that it commemorates the day Lord Siva's consort, the powerful goddess Parvathi, gives her son, Murugan, the vel (lance) to vanquish three demons and their large army which were plaguing the world.
Thaipusam falls on a full moon day in the auspicious 10th Tamil month of Thai when the constellation of Pusam, the star of well-being, rises over the eastern horizon.
In Kuala Lumpur, the festival is celebrated on a mammoth scale at the Batu Caves temple on the outskirts of the city. It began in 1892, started by early Tamils who migrated to colonial Malaya. .....

Waterfall Shots ... Multiple Exposure.
|
|
I was always told a waterfall shot should have smooth, cloth like flowing water. When I had a chat with a photographer friend a while back, he asked me to try taking a few hi-speed shots into a single frame and checked out the result ...
Well, I came across a small waterfall (more of a rapid) along the Karak Highway and decided to give this method a try. The problem was that, I only have my digital P&S and a tripod in the back of my car.
As an experiment, I shot one normal slow speed shot (1 sec @ f/8, that's as much my camera could handle) of the waterfall, and here's the outcome:
I then shot another 6 continuous 'fast' shots (1/90 sec @ f/5.6). All the six shots froze the flow of the water. Since the water is flowing, the ripple and sprinkle of the streaming water is different in each of the shots. To emulate a multiple exposure type shot on a 35mm film, I used PS CS to lay the 6 shots, one layer on top of the other with each layer transparency at 20%.
This is what I got:
What do you think?
This is a more traditional slow exposure shot, resulting to a silky smooth texture of the flowing water ...

Test shots from my Yashica Electro 35
|
|
Remember my new toy ... the Yashica Electro 35GS Rangefinder ...
I just got back the test roll from the photo lab, and I like the results. The auto exposure of this 1968 camera is excellent. The light seal seems to be good. This roll was in the camera for 3 weeks.
Here are some shots from the test roll .... Next, to load this rangefinder with a B&W film

Ponggal Festival
|
|
I had a "free" afternoon today after a seminar/training I attended concluded a little early. So, I decided to join Ted to go to Rawang where the local Indian community is celebrating "Ponggal"
I don't know much about this festival, but I took the opportunity to chat with some people there and was told it is a harvest and thanksgiving festival to celebrate the first harvest. The festival is celebrated during the harvest season, where the first product of the grain is boiled in a clay pot in under the sun to pay tribute to the sun for good harvest. This celebration started in India but when the Indians came to Malaysia long time ago, they brought Ponggal festival here.
Aaaaannnnndddd .... I have some pictures
